Mr. Zwerdling moved to Humboldt County in 1959. He attended local schools and graduated from Arcata High School in 1969. He then attended Stanford University, graduating in 1973 with academic honors.  Thereafter, he attended the University of Santa Clara School of Law and graduated in 1976.  While a law student, Mr. Zwerdling was involved in moot court and he also published a Law Review Article titled  “Informed Consent and the Mental Patient: California Recognizes a Mental Patient’s Right to Refuse Psychosurgery and Shock Treatment.”

After passing the bar exam, he began working in the Humboldt County Public Defender’s office. After he left the public defender’s office, Mr. Zwerdling, beginning at the age of 29, was court appointed to represent five criminal defendants charged with homicide.  He obtained acquittals in three of those homicide cases.  One defendant was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the fourth case.  One client was convicted in a felony murder situation.

He went into private, civil practice in 1978 and has worked continuously since that date as an attorney specializing in personal injury cases.

In the course of his legal career, Mr. Zwerdling has provided pro bono representation to rape & child molestation victims, the Humboldt County Rape Crisis organization, and Native American Tribes in desecration matters.  He has also assisted domestic abuse victims in obtaining emergency restraining orders, served on the Humboldt County Bench Bar Liaison Committee which formulated many of the Humboldt County Superior Court Rules which are in existence today, and taught courses in criminal law & procedure at College of the Redwoods Police Academy.

He has been married to Margery Frago Zwerdling since 1978. He has two children. Nate Zwerdling, who is working in the firm, and Maya Zwerdling, a resident M.D. at Sutter Hospital in Santa Rosa.

Mr. Zwerdling is a member of Ghost Train, a band that plays funk, rock, and R&B.  He also is founder and CEO of Mercury Sky Records, a local music label that features some of Humboldt County’s finest original singer-songwriters.  In his free time,  Mr. Zwerdling loves to backpack, garden, and travel.

As recognition of legal career, Mr. Zwerdling has been inducted into American College of Trial Lawyers, invited into the American Board of Trial Advocates, and awarded a distinction as a Northern California Superlawyer. He is also rated as “AV-pre-eminent by Martindale-Hubbell.
